George Miller to head jury at 2016 Cannes Film Festival

With two months still to go before the start of the 69th Cannes Film Festival, news is beginning to trickle in as to who will grace this year’s Croisette and climb the famous red-carpet outside the Grand Palais.

Jodie Foster will be there accompanied by lead actors George Clooney and Julia Roberts for her out-of-competition film Money Monster. This is Roberts’ first time ever at Cannes in a career spanning some 48 years.  Steven Spielberg, director of Jaws and ET, will return to the festival with the premier of his out-of-competition feature The BFG, an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s famous children’s book.  Spielberg hasn’t been back to Cannes since Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008.

Cannes would be incomplete, of course, without the presence of festival habitué Woody Allen who will be there this year with his romantic comedy Café Society starring Kristen Stewart, Blake Lively and Steve Carell. Sean Penn has chosen two French actors, Adèle Exarchopoulos et Jean Reno. to star alongside Charlize Theron and Javier Bardem in his fifth full-length feature behind the camera – a thriller called The Last Face. And Iron Man 3 director Shane Black will present his buddy movie Nice Guys Set in Los Angeles in the 1970s, Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe play two private detectives inves

As for French films, Bruno Dumont’s  Ma Loute with Fabrice Luchini (L’Hermine) and Juliette Binoche will be shown on the festival’s opening day.
This year Australian director George Miller of Mad Max fame will head the festival jury whose members are yet to be announced. Japan’s Naomi Kawase is president of the jury for short features. And Laurent Lafitte of the Comédie Française steps into the shoes of Lambert Wilson as Master of Ceremony.

The 69th Cannes Film Festival takes place between 11-22 May. The list of official competition entries will be announced at the beginning of April.
